Some History

The Jeep Peugeot BA10/5 Transmission was used in many Jeeps mainly because American Motors Corporation was in financial straits.

When they anticipated the debut of the 1987 Wrangler 4.2 six cylinder, their first choice of transmission was the Asin/Warner Ax15. However, the Japan based company was already very busy building the Ax15 for Dodge and a variation for Toyota.

Since Asin/Warner was also busy with the Ax5 for Jeep, Dodge and Toyota. They would not be able to tool up for Jeep Ax15 for two more years. This turned out to be a nightmare for thousands of new Jeep owners and Jeep. Peugeot only sent a small amount of Warranty Units to Jeep in the USA. Jeep lovers had waited for a year to buy the much anticipated new Wranglers.

Jeep sold 557,412 Wranglers in 1987. Some were 2.5’s with the Ax5 and the rest were Ax15 4.2’s with the Peugeot BA10/5. Thousands of Peugeot BA10/5 transmissions failed in the first six months and Jeep quickly ran out of warranty replacements. This left thousands of customers with brand new Jeeps stuck at dealerships for months awaiting more BA10’s from France.

That is why I started selling The Ax15 from BA10 Conversion Kit in 1990.
